Rule #3: A Man Can't See, He Can't Fight

Terry Silver explaining rule 3 of the Quicksilver Method to Daniel

This rule highlights the importance of impairing the opponent's vision. By attacking the eyes or otherwise obstructing vision, an opponent becomes vulnerable and less able to defend themselves.

The third rule is perhaps the most brutal and the first time we see Daniel implementing the lessons in a real world environment as Silver arranges for a man in a club to attack Daniel leading him to punch the man in the face to block his vision. Daniel feels great remorse for this action but is encouraged by Terry who tells him he has done the right thing.

It is at this point that Daniel begins to realize that the training he has been receiving might not be entirely what it initially seemed.

Transcript from the Scene

Terry Silver:
Rule Number Three: A man can't see, he can't fight. If you hit him square in the nose...he'll be blinded by his tears and choke on his own blood. Here's how it works. You wait until your man is attacking and when he's close enough...
Daniel LaRusso:
But that would be face contact. I'd be disqualified.
Terry Silver:
He ran into your fist, not your fault, right?
Daniel LaRusso:
Right.
Terry Silver:
He can't continue. That means you win. You like that?
Daniel LaRusso:
I like that.
Terry Silver:
Good. Give it a shot. Let's try it over here on your friend. Reverse punch. Visualize. This isn't a bunch of sticks and pipes anymore. This is a living fighting machine that wants to detach...your head from the rest of your body! It's blood. So what? Make believe it's his. This guy wants to break you. Humiliate you. Stomp you into the ground. What are you going to do about it?
Daniel LaRusso:
Gonna nail him!
Terry Silver:
Then do it. Yes! You did it!
Daniel LaRusso:
I did it, man!
Terry Silver:
You nailed him! You're ready!
Daniel LaRusso:
I'm ready!
